Silk Weaving at Ban Krua Community & Jim Thompson's Thai House
Half Day Tour

Silk Weaving, the community has been well-known for its skill more than 50 years. In the old days every household in the community wove silk a means of living. Jim Thompson used to order large quantities of the silk made in this area. His mysterious disappearance in 1967 caused to plunge. Today, only a handful of households still carry on the unique silk weaving tradition of the community.

Historical accounts of the villagers are traced back to ancient Cham people who immigrated from Cambodia in the reign of king Rama I. They asked for the kings permission to settle and were allowed to establish their houses on a donated piece of land on the bank of Khlong Maharat

These people paid gratitude to the king by fighting in a war to protect the kingdom. What they brought with them was their expertise in fishing and local silk weaving. The letter was passed on since the World War II. Initially, they made only what they used in daily life, such as sarong and loincloth.

They had developed their skill to make silk cloth for sale in the provinces and Jim Thompson subsequently found them and helped them to improve design and patterns. Since then high-quality silk cloth has been produced to catch the eyes of international shoppers. Jim Thompson’s silk was featured in the movie Ben-Hur and since then it has been recognized worldwide.

Then, visit Jim Thompson's Thai House, The remarkable Thai style house was the work of Mr. Jim Thompson, an American who came to Thailand at the end of The Second World War and revived The Thai Silk Industry. His later disappearance in the Malaysian jungles remains a mystery to this day.
