is gained by giving food to monks who are entirely dependent on these
gifts since they may not grow or prepare their own food. So it is that
every morning the monks go forth from their temples with a bowl into
which people put food. In return they receive a blessing. This simple
act of giving is at the heart of Thai Buddhism.
Phra That Doi Suthep Temple, This temple is Chiang Mai’s most important and visible landmark, and overlooks the city from its forested mountain backdrop. It is 3,520 feet above sea level, and dates from 1383. The temple is approached on foot by climbing a steep staircase comprising 290 steps. The less energetic may ascend by funicular railcars. The temple’s golden pagoda contains holy Buddha’s relic, and attracts Buddhist pilgrims from all over the world throughout the year.
